When you think of engineering, you think of code. Diederik Geertzen would argue: that’s only half the story.

A strong technical base

With a background in Computer Science at TU/e, Diederik already had the technical skills. What he was looking for next was growth beyond that.
Something that would help him navigate real-world environments beyond just technical challenges.

The unexpected advantage

“The biggest impact for me was the social side of engineering,” he says.
Through coaching, he learned how to:

- Give constructive feedback
- Navigate difficult conversations
- Build stronger relationships with teammates

“These are things you don’t really learn at university, but they matter a lot.”

When it clicked

The turning point wasn’t tied to a specific project. It was a feeling. The realisation that he belonged in the team. That sense of belonging changed how he approached his work and how confidently he contributed.

A challenging start

The transition wasn’t effortless. “At university, you go deep into technical topics. At work, there’s so much more going on.”
Instead of holding back, Diederik leaned in, asking questions, sharing ideas, and getting involved beyond his immediate scope.

Freedom to explore

Today, one of the things he values most is autonomy. “You’re given a problem, and it’s up to you to figure out how to solve it.”
That freedom encourages both initiative and creativity.

His advice?

“You’ll look back on the year and realise how much you’ve grown.” (And yes, he adds with a smile, “the salary doesn’t hurt either.”)
